Friday Five

I haven’t participated in the Friday Five for a while, but the questions appealed this week so…

1. …sent a handwritten letter? Last month, I think. To my friend Sarah in Seattle.

2. …baked something from scratch or made something by hand? I haven’t baked in aaaaages, because our previous flat did not have an oven. Our new place does, and there are big baking plans in the making. Chocolate cake, anyone?

3. …camped in a tent? June 1993. A few days before Graduation, a bunch of us camped out in somewhere near Echenevex. It was fun.

4. …volunteered your time to church, school, or community? Not recently. Oops.

5. …helped a stranger? Mark and I came across a maid who had been beaten whilst on our way home from a friend’s house a few weeks ago. We took her to the Police station.

:o)

I’m back!

Does crazy dance around living room

Man, this has been driving me MAD!

I’m so happy to have Movable Type back up and running again.

Woooooo hooooooooo!

Work in Progress

What a week, eh?

Things have been a little chaotic in casa Krisalis. I’ve had very little internet access for the past 3 days, since I’ve been attending a training course. Our flat has been reconnected to the outside world this evening, and I’m now working on reviving Movable Type on the new server.

Fingers crossed things work out

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I must go, because Mark and I are meeting Andrea for dinner.

Ooooooh, gotta love that it’s the weekend. And my Mum and Dad arrive tomorrow night! Happiness all round.

Yawn!

This whole moving thing is tiring. I ache. I need sleep. I need exercise. I need someone to come and fix the tap so the washing machine can function. I need a weekend.

The (potentially) good news is that I will be attending a training course Wednesday – Friday.

I’m strangely excited at the prospect of sitting in a classroom again, learning things. I haven’t been on a training course for years. Well, the economic downturn at the beginning of last year killed the training budget, then I changed jobs, so this it the first opportunity I’ve had in a while.

Sometimes I think I’d really like to go back to Uni. Maybe do an MBA. Stretch my brain a bit. But then I remember that there are exams to sit and papers to write and that these things takes time and effort and determination. And money. I’m not quite keen enough to want to take that on. Yet.

Good things to look forward to: 1) My Mum and Dad are coming to visit next week. They arrive on Monday Saturday. 2) My birthday. July 6th, in case you were wondering. I like birthdays. I like presents and cake and all that good stuff! And the parents will be here to celebrate too. 3) The wedding looms closer. July 5th 2003 is seeming less and less far away. So I’m going to start the wedding dress shopping process in earnest soon. Woo!

Have a happy Tuesday.

Greetings, Earthling

Hello there, how are you this fine day?

Me, I’m doing OK. We managed to move house over the weekend. It was hard work! The new place is starting to take shape. There are still boxes all over the place, and we have some furniture that doesn’t really fit anywhere, so there is still some work to do. But the bulk of the hot’n'heavy stuff has been taken care of. Whew!

Krisalis is somewhat in limbo for the time being. My files have been moved over to the new host, and the DNS nameserver has been reset, but I need to spend some time to fix Movable Type so it can run on the new server – rearrange the file paths and all that good stuff. I’m hoping it won’t be too difficult, once I figure out what exactly needs changing.

The problem is that an internet connection has yet to be installed at my new flat (no phone line either), which means I only have limited access to my files.

I’ll continue updating via notepad until I can get MT back up.

UPDATE: Things are more or less up on the new server…with the exception of one thing…I can’t log into Movable Type. It seems that the new server has a differen version of the Berkeley DB library (whatever that may be), and the new host can’t read the files from the old host.

This can be fixed. But I need shell access to my server…which I have now requested. I have some serious doubts about my ability do accomplish anything in UNIX these days, but I’ll give it a shot. In the mean time, comments will remain down, so send me email!

Eeeeeevil

Excuse my language, but FUCKING HELL.

My stupid-ass web hosting server is doing an “emergency transfer” and I have got 5 measly days to backup all my data, and move my site to get it up and running on the new server – which, of course, uses entirely different software. This means I will have to change all the site paths on my MT files, and the search function I currently use will need to be replaced, and my recent referrals script will need fixing, and all my skins will need to be changed and this does NOT make me happy.

Slap on top of that the fact that work is really busy right now, and I am in the midst of moving apartments, so my flat currently looks like it was hit by a tornado, and you can be guaranteed that I do not have time or energy for this crap right now.

So if I disappear for a little while after June 25th, you’ll know Krisalis has been sucked into the big black hole of doom by the evil web hosting people and their dastardly plot to destroy me.

Fear not though! For I am strong! Actually, that’s a lie. But I’ll figure something out. Or I’ll wait until Andrea does, and then I’ll persuade her, or beg her, or bribe her to fix my account too.

Psychology

Psychologists say we are staking out the computer as our personal space, creating a sense of control of our surroundings.

“It says this is my territory; look how exciting or dramatic it is.”

Some people tend to stick things on to the equipment to make it theirs, or use mouse mats that make political statements.

“Mouse mats can display a lot about not only your interests but also your value system,” said Mr Williams. “People like to display their attitudes and beliefs.”

Ok then, analyse this:

Work computer: I’ve got a small beanie baby dog that my sister gave me on top of my monitor. There are 14 icons on my desktop, all neatly arranged down the left hand side. Most of the icons are links to software programs/applications that I use on a daily basis. The other links are to folders I use most often. My desktop background is completely plain. My screensaver is one of the bog standard Windows ones, which brings up my name scrolling across the screen if the computer is inactive for more than 15 minutes. I put my name on my screen saver so that people can find my desk if they are looking for me while I’m in a meeting, since we don’t have name plates on our cubes. I’ve got a freebie mouse pad with an arty picture of a Boat Quay hotel on it, and a standard issue mouse.

Home computer: No toys or adornments of any kind on this computer, just a sticker with the telephone number to the Pacific Internet helpdesk. The desktop is a mess, covered in 40 or more icons and documents and programs and all sorts of junk that either Mark or I have downloaded. The desktop background is black, with a cool picture of buildings in Hong Kong on it. The mouse pad is small, and narrower than most mouse pads. It is plain brown leather and slots in nicely beside the keyboard. My mouse is nothing special, just a standard point-and-click, with a scroll wheel.

I wonder what this says about me?

I think it says that my work computer is for work. It’s neat and tidy. Organised, but not very personal.

My home computer, on the other hand, is my toy. In general, I use it for fun or amusement, rather than work. It’s got all the good stuff in it – my pictures, files, funny downloads, MP3 files. There is stuff all over the desktop, because I tend to download stuff there so I can find it. It’s functional, but not neatly maintained.

What does your computer say about you?

Watch Me Dance

Mark is taking a little break from blogging.

However, he seems to need an outlet for the cool links he’s found, ’cause he emailed this one to me this morning.

Thus I bring you Watch Me Dance.

Very, very strange, and very funny. Indeed.

From: Arnold (HR Manager) To: All_Users Subject: Loss of Handphone

Hello All,

I have misplaced my handphone somewhere in the building this morning. It is a blue Ericsson phone with a black leather cover and a belt clip. Please call me on x187 if you have found it, or return it to my desk.

Thank you.

Arnold.

10 minutes later….

From: James (VP of Manufacturing) To: All_Users Subject:Re: Loss of Handphone

Hey Arnie,

Are you sure you lost it this morning? Perhaps you left it in one of the meeting rooms after a bit of Hanky Panky last night, eh?!

Regards, James
